Q. What is the purpose of having a County Fair?
A. A County Fair has many different facets. The promotion of agriculture through contests and judging has traditionally been thought of as a way to constantly improve the way that we, as a society, grow produce, raise animals, cook, sew, and make and do all sorts of things. County Fairs have also been a time of community gathering and sharing. Good natured, old-fashioned family fun!
Q. Who can exhibit (enter) at the Fair?
A. Anyone, of any age, can exhibit at the Fair. If you were in 4-H then you would exhibit in 4-H class. If you were not in 4-H then you would exhibit in Open Class. Open Class means that the exhibits and entries are open to anyone.
Q. How do I know what I can enter at the Fair?
A. This publication is called a Premium Book. In this book you will find Divisions for entries listed. Within each Division you will find a listing of the different categories (lots) of items that can be entered. If you wish to enter something that is not listed then usually there is an "any other" category. When you decide on what to enter you refer to it by Division and then by the lot number of the item. For example: A wooden Jewelry box may be Division A, Lot 81. A Fabric Basket may be Division B, Lot 96. Green Beans may be Division D, Lot 1
Q. Are there separate Divisions based on age?
A. Yes. There is Division C, which has some of the same categories as Division B, but they are broken down by age for Children and Teens.
Q. So, how do I enter my item(s) in the Fair?
A. To enter you fill out an entry form and take your item(s) to the Fairgrounds on the Fair-time Wednesday evening of August 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. NOTHING will be accepted any other time or day!! Any exhibits brought on any other day will be rejected. Open Class is exhibited in the 4-H/Open Class building. Check-in with the Open Class Superintendent and get your item(s) entered. It’s as simple as that.
Q. What if I want to enter animals?
A. Entry registration for animals is at the barn, Fair-time Wednesday evening only from 6 pm. - 10 p.m.
Q. Once my item(s) is/are entered what happens next?
A. After all entries have been received, tagged and displayed then they will be judged on Thursday morning. Open Class is closed to the public during the judging process. Open
Class usually re-opens between one o’clock and three o’clock on Thursday - this depends on the number of entries to be judged.
Q. What happens after judging?
A. After the judges are finished the ribbons are put on the items that received them. Blue ribbon for first place, red ribbon for second place and white ribbon for third place. Grand Champion ribbons are for exceptional items and those ribbons are purple.
Q. So, if I get a ribbon do I get anything else?
A. Yes, you get what is called a premium, which is an amount of money paid out to participants by the Fair (prize money, if you will). In the Premium book each category has the amount of the premium listed under the category heading. Premiums range from $1 to $20 or more depending on the item. You will be issued a check or paid cash for your premiums depending on the current policy of the Fair Board. The check is handed to you at the time you pick up your item at the end of the fair - usually Fair-time Sunday in the evening. If you remove your item before the Open Class releases it - you forfeit your money. Release time info. is in the Premium book.
Q. Where does the premium money that the Fair gives away come from?
A. The Fair generates funds for premiums, ribbons, entertainment, advertising, and events through County Aid, Winter Storage Fees, Gate Fees and - last but certainly not least - Donations from local businesses. Every little bit helps us provide you with the best Fair possible!
Q. What about the other contests? Are they part of Open Class?
A. Other contests at the Fair such as the Cook-off Contest and the Pie Contest are not a part of Open Class. Those contests are open to anyone of any age and they pay cash prize money.
Q. What if I have more questions about Open Class?
A. Call one of the Open Class Supervisors, Darlene Maki at 218-848-2407 or Pat Thums at 218-323-7743.
